Hebrews 12:28-29
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire.
1 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Isaiah 66:2
And all those things exist,” Says the Lord. “But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My word.
John 4:23-24
But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
Reformed Worship
Daniel Hyde - “The Belgic Confession of Faith links the Reformed churches' belief in the sufficiency of the Word of God to the area of worship… “The whole manner of worship which God requires” is found in the Scriptures. This means we come to worship on God’s terms, not ours; that we do in worship what God wants, not what we want…The Word, then, contains all we need in order to know how to worship; therefore, we reject all human-made laws or elements of worship.”
Ernie Reisinger – “Briefly stated, the regulative principle teaches that God has set forth in Scripture the only acceptable ways of worshiping him and that it is sin to attempt to worship him in any other way.”
James Renihan – “The regulative principle of worship was constructed to protect the liberty of God’s people. Our fathers believed that anything that was introduced in worship which was not commanded in Scripture was an intrusion on the liberty of God’s people.”
Kevin DeYoung - “God is the one we want to impress, the one we most want to honor. Our first aim must not be to win over the culture or appeal to the unregenerate. Worship is for the Worthy One”
Jonathan Cruze – “The God of the universe appears and meets with His people, and by His sovereign and gracious power, He changes them.”
Jeremiah Burroughs - “To comfort his brother and explain what happened, Moses speaks the word of God to Aaron. Moses said earlier that God “will be sanctified by all those who come near” to worship Him in the tabernacle (Ex 29:43). Thus, he will be sanctified in all things that concern his worship; that is, God’s name will be hallowed… God will have his people live in acknowledgement of his holiness. If they do not, God will sanctify himself against them in righteous judgement… Also consider the lesson to all the people of Israel… They will approach God with fear and reverence because of this event. The people will ask themselves: “How shall we appear before this holy God? We need to take careful heed in his presence and worship him according to the way he wants to be worshipped.” …In matters of worship, God is concerned about minor issues. These things may seem insignificant to us, but to God, they are not small details. Those who enter public places, especially places to worship of God, need to have the fear of God much upon them and exercise caution. Though God does not always express his will with explicit instructions, he expects us to discern it from his word. How were Nadab and Abihu to know the mind of God about this “strange fire”? Hebrews 12:28-29: “Worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ‘God is a consuming fire.’”
Richard Barcellos - “I define means of grace as the delivery systems God has instituted to bring grace – that is, spiritual power, spiritual change, spiritual help, spiritual fortitude, spiritual blessings–to needy souls on the earth. Grace comes from our Father, through the Son, by the Spirit ordinarily in conjunction with the ordinary means (i.e., the Word of God, prayer, baptism, and the Lord’s Supper).”
Jonathan Cruze – “From start to finish the service impresses on us our true identity. We receive the indelible name that God gives us, not the false and fragile names that the world has offered in the preceding week. And now, confident of our status before him, emboldened through the justification we have in the Son, and empowered by the indwelling Holy Spirit, we go. We are equipped to face the hardships of a world of sin because of the superabundant grace that God has poured out on us. We go out with a mission: to be God’s Spirit, we are called to find more worshippers.”
